Experience the simplicity, creativity and spirit of Harlan Hubbard at Behringer-Crawford Museum’s newest exhibit, Driftwood, opening April 13, 2025 and running through August 17, 2025. Inspired by Jessica K. Whitehead’s acclaimed biography Driftwood: The Life of Harlan Hubbard, this exhibit explores the life, art and enduring legacy of one of Kentucky’s most beloved artists and thinkers.

The exhibit features pieces from Behringer-Crawford Museum’s extensive Hubbard collection, including the notable painting Brent Remembered (c. 1980s, acrylic on masonite), among other works, rarely displayed to the public. BCM is honored to serve as the largest public repository of Hubbard’s artwork, showcasing the transformative journey of a man deeply rooted in simplicity, creativity and environmental stewardship.

Guests will be introduced to Hubbard’s philosophy and lifestyle through his journals, paintings and personal artifacts. Often compared to iconic American thinker Henry David Thoreau, Hubbard’s dedication to simple living and his connection to nature continue to inspire generations. From his shantyboat journeys with his wife, Anna, to the creation of their Payne Hollow homestead, Hubbard’s life story is a testament to pursuing purpose and creativity in harmony with nature. "She paints a vivid picture of Harlan and Anna, resurrecting memories of this talented and countercultural couple whom I and so many others were honored to know," said Paul A. Tenkotte, Ph.D., co-editor of The Encyclopedia of Northern Kentucky and contributor to A Brief History of Northern Kentucky.

The exhibit will include a special book signing on April 13 from 2 to 4 p.m. with author Jessica K. Whitehead and other local writers and artists inspired by Harlan Hubbard. The Harlan Hubbard: Ripple Effect exhibit will also be on display, celebrating Hubbard’s themes of nature, simplicity and sustainability.

In addition, Behringer-Crawford Museum will partner with The Carnegie on Wednesday, April 23 at 7:30 p.m at The Carnegie in Covington, KY. This event features a discussion with Whitehead and world premiere of Piano Trio No. 2: Payne Hollow by Louisville composer Daniel Gilliam, performed by members of the NouLou Chamber Players.
